SKY TAVERN’S 75-YEAR HISTORY



*1937 First UNR Winter Carnival at Grass Lake

*1938 Wayne Poulsen and Ed Heath open Mt. Rose Upski at Grass Lake

*1944 Robinson Neeman opens Sky Tavern

*1945 Keston Ramsey purchases Sky Tavern and adds 3 rope tows

*1948 Marce Herz starts the Reno Junior Ski Program at Sky Tavern

1952 Bus service starts after the demand for the program continues to grow

*1953 Reno Junior Ski Program becomes part of the city of Reno Recreation and Parks Department

1959 Ramseys sell Sky Tavern

1964 Ramseys reacquire Sky Tavern when buyers default on the loan

*1968 City of Reno buys Sky Tavern

All new lifts were installed and the lodge was remodeled with a grant from the Fleischman Foundation. As a condition of the grant, Sky Tavern is to continue to operate the Reno Junior Ski Program to benefit the region’s youth.

1972 More than 30 buses pick up school children from across the greater Truckee Meadows

*1974 Steve McKinney sets World Speed Skiing Record in Cervinia

*1977 Steve McKinney sets World Speed Skiing Record in Portillo

*1978 Steve McKinney breaks his own World Speed Skiing Record in Portillo

*1987 Steve McKinney sets World Speed Skiing Record in Portillo

*1981 Tamara Mckinney wins World Cup in Giant Slalom

*1983 Tamara McKinney wins Overall World Cup and the World Cup in Giant Slalom

*1984 Tamara McKinney wins World Cup in Slalom

*1989 Tamara McKinney wins the World Championship Combined

1991 First Board of Directors installed to run the program

1993 IRS 501(c)(3) status established

Sky Kids program was started by Thomas Wise.

1994 Sky Ridge chairlift installed

Sky Tavern Adaptive Program starts

PSIA Ski School established

*1988 Lane Spina wins Silver in Freestyle at Calgary Olympics

2001 America chairlift installed

2012 David Wise wins first of four Winter X Games in the Superpipe at Aspen

2013 David Wise wins World Championship in Mens Freeski Halfpip at Voss

2014 David Wise wins Gold in Men’s Freeski Halfpipe at Sochi Olympics

2018 David Wise wins Gold in Men’s Freeski Halfpipe at Pyeongchang Olympics

2022 David Wise wins Silver in Men’s Freeski Halfpipe at Bejing Olympics
